I can't remember who said this (sorry!) but someone mentioned that they mix the Feline's Pride with the regular kitty food (in my case Fancy Feast) to keep the costs down.
I'd like to try my kitties on raw, but with Fletcher using a 10mL vial of insulin every 3-4 weeks and going through 150+ test strips at the same time, there's NO WAY I could afford to feed my kitties soley raw (unless me and my kids eat only mayo sandwiches! ). By mixing the FP and FF does that equal out to the price of solely feeding just the FF? Do you mix it 50/50? Give one raw meal a day and the rest canned?
Since the FP is balanced with all the necessary nutrients, I wouldn't have to supplement any more if I mixed it with canned, right?

Thanks all! |

You could also start making your own raw. Yes Felines Pride is fabulous but I have been making my own from Anne's recipe here at www.catnutrition.org
I phoned around and found an organic butcher willing to grind up the chicken for me (twice, he passes it through the grinder with 2 different plates so that there are no sharp bones), add the raw egg yolks, water and supplements, put in in Mason jars and into the freezer it goes. I pay about $16-$20 Canadian for an organic chicken.
I take out a jar every couple of days or so to make sure there's always one unthawed in the fridge.
Now I find that Mari is better she is eating a bit less than when she was diabetic and it lasts longer....I get another chicken every 6 weeks or so.
So I am finding it LESS EXPENSIVE than the poisonous dry food (to be sure when you factor in all those vet bills, but certainly less than the $60 a month Canadian that dry cost me) and certainly less expensive than wet foods.
Interesting eh? who would have thought feeding one's cat organic chicken with these vitamins would cost less than the commercial pet food?

| I mix 50/50 Feline's Pride and FF Gourmet Chicken Feast (my cats this variety the best). That turns out to to slightly more than FF alone, but I buy the Feline's Pride in bulk, so that costs me less. I mix the raw and canned all together and add 2 tsb water just to warm the raw up a bit. I leave it out until it's all eaten, which could be 8-10 hours. |

| I think someone else has divided up the Feline's Pride, but I can't remember exactly how. I think they partially thaw the tub, which is OK to do, I think, if ice crystals remain. Then they cut it into smaller pieces. I use 6 - 8 ou. per day which means I use a tub every 5 days - that keeps fine in the refrigerator. |

Well, I haven't ordered any Feline's Pride, yet, but I did go buy some meat for my kitties. The other day I thawed a steak out to give them. I put about a tablespoon in each of their bowls and they ALL chowed down! Taylor went crazy! I figure it was a good thing he can't go outside or he would've run out and tried to take down a cow!!!!
So for a few days now I've been adding some raw to their canned food and they usually eat the raw, then come back for the canned later!
I bought some ground turkey, boneless chicken thighs, and some turkey cutlets for them so they can all at least have a bit of realy meat every meal.
Maybe soon I'll get some of the samples of the FP and see if they like that any better-- as long as they don't like it so much that they refuse the canned! |

If you supplement more than, say 15%, of their diet with raw meat you should probably consider supplementing it - either by making food (as Carol mentioned) or by using a supplement mix such as Platinum Performanace or Felines Instincts. Remember - meat alone is not nutritionally complete - no calcium, etc.

how do you get the FP out in meal sized chunks??? It comes frozen and I'm not sure how to carve that frozen block down into something else...would like to carve it down so a meal amount goes into a baggie or ice cube tray and back into the freezer...
I think there's another thread on this subject. Personally, I thaw the containers just a bit, then separate into meal-size portions in reclosable freezer bags. Then, at meal-time, I can just toss a baggie into a bowl of hot tap water and let it warm while I get the mail, scoop the litter boxes, pill the kitties, etc. |

| I have been feeding Shay a mix of FF and FP since the summertime. He gets 1 can of FF and about 2 Tbs. of FP at each meal. He loves it! I can get a 3 lb. tub of FP and make it last about 2 1/2 months. When it comes in the mail, it is usually thawed to the point where you can still see ice crystals on top, but it can be separated. I scoop out enough for about 4 meals and put it into individual freezer bags. I know I need about 24 hours to thaw one bag. When in a pinch, I get Nature's Variety raw medallions from my local feed store. I can get a 1 lb. bag for $5, which saves me a little bit of money. The FP, to me, is far superior, but what gets me is the shipping cost. If I get a 1 lb tub I end up paying the same amount for the food as I do the shipping. So, I have to make sure I have the money to invest in buying atleast 3 lbs. at a time. Shay has had problems with crystals and UTI's, and I have found that since supplementing his diet with raw, they have seemingly gone away. There's quite a bit of Vit C in raw that helps to keep his pH in the normal range. When in a bind and not able to give raw, I supplement his FF with Vit C crystals. So, anyway, back to your original inquiry ... for me, I think mixing FP with FF is a great way to help out your little kitty when on a tight budge. Remember to stick to the wheat free, low carb varieties. There's a variety box of FF that I get that includes: Gourmet Chicken, Chunky Chicken and Roasted Chicken. Shay gets the first two and the girls get a mix of the first two and the roasted chicken. The roasted chicken is too high for my little man! I also feed Turkey and Giblets, Beef Feast and the Turkey and Liver varieties. All low in carbs and no fish. I try to mix it up for each meal so he doesn't get bored. Hope this helps! |

Thanks, Kate! I really try to keep Fletcher's carb % to under 3 as he is a "thirsty" boy, so every little bit helps. I was looking at the FP site and you are right, you definitely need to buy more so the shipping doesn't cost more than the food!
At the moment, I've been mixing in some ground chicken and turkey with the FF. I ordered some Platinum Performance so I won't have to worry so much about the raw to canned ratio.
I'm just really glad that ALL the kitties like the raw! I've already noticed that, even with the amount they've been getting, that the poopies are not as stinky! What a bonus! |
