seeing CarolRex's testing numbers while Rex is sick has got me thinking about this.
I always assumed that even if sick and even if not eating much, a diabetics BGs would still go high at least at some points. also there's a lot of evidence that illness actually causes high BGs, yet Rex is at +60 with all normal BGs and most under 100, despite having a bit of sugar, gravy containing foods etc (albeit not much of any of it). would this simply be due to the fact that he's been barely eating, or could it be that the pancreas is functioning now?
thoughts?

Melanie - I'm no expert, but I think it can go either way.
* The pancreas could be functioning and keeping BG's low
* The pancreas may not be fully functional, but with no food in the system the BG's may be low
When Meow Meow was ill (heart failure), she hadn't eaten in a week and her BG's climbed up very high - in the 400's by the time I got her home from hospitalization and started her on insulin. She'd been a recovered diabetic for a year and a half, so I think it was a combination of the illness and stress and her body shutting down (including the pancreas)... it's also possible they gave her dextrose IV at the vet's... |
